At each doorway,

2024

At each doorway, is a digital text weaving on the topic of the Bulgarian New Year's ritual survakane, in which children recite a sort of prayer or incantation to adults in their families and neighborhoods, wishing them and their crops health and prosperity in the new year.

The weaving's design and colors are adapted from a pillowcase handwoven by my great-great-grandmother exactly 100 years prior, in the winter of 1923/24. The piece reflects upon the cyclicality of time and the desire for contemporary rituals that wish health, prosperity, and protection to people, plants, and land.

The piece was activated by a performance in which I translated and adapted the original survakane text into a poem that held instructions for audience members to conduct a protection ritual with soil.

At each doorway, was first exhibited as part of Haunted Archives, a collaborative exhibition ecosystem between myself and sofía méndez subieta. The exhibition ecosystem consists of two exhibitions that transitioned into each other and expanded into other forms of artistic programming such as a mending workshop, performance, and dinner ritual.
